LARA LEE CALLOWAY
Funeral rites for Lara Lee Calloway will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in the village church at Canada de Los Alamos in the valley below her childhood home on the Old Santa Fe Trail. She died in her sleep on May 3 at home in Chicago. She lived in an artful world filled with colors and fabrics and images and fine trinkets and sacred illuminations and people with stories to tell. Growing up, she worked in Santa Fe galleries, ushered at the Opera and traveled often in Georgia O'Keeffe country. She graduated from St. Michael's High School in 1991 and received a BA in art history from UNM in 1995. She left Santa Fe in her early twenties, drawn to the advanced School of a great museum, the Art Institute of Chicago, where she received a BA in fine arts in 2000. She remained in Chicago, doing photography and fashion, making jewelry, acting in her beloved improv theaters and enjoying urban life while supporting herself with office work, predominantly in the financial district. Last fall she entered a new graduate program at the SAIC about public engagement in events and museums. In a SAIC memorial service, friends and classmates lauded her work and joyful personality. Everyone will miss her humorous portraits of Chicago posted in social media and written with her thumbs while riding on trains and buses. Lara was only 42. She was preceded in death 14 months ago by her mother, Tova Calloway. She is survived by her father, Larry Calloway of Crestone, CO, her sister Maia Calloway and her aunt Linda Jo Calloway.
