The Metropolitan: Beware the Maelstrom Mycelia!

Roxy Paine: Maelstrom.

The sign on the roof notes Roxy’s work is “based on systems such as vascular networks, tree roots and whirlpools“ .

What whirlpools? I investigated on the internet and found the piece is "based on vascular networks, tree roots, industrial piping, and fungal mycelia…”

Whirlpools is a replacement word! It is actually a Fungal Mycelia!

Oh dear!!

“Mycelium (plural mycelia) is the vegetative part of a fungus, consisting of a mass of branching, thread-like hyphae”

And!

“It is through the mycelium that a fungus absorbs nutrients from its environment (the roof). It does this in a two stage process. Firstly the hyphae secrete enzymes onto the food source (you and me). breaking down polymers (us!) into monomers. These monomers (us!)are then absorbed into the mycelium ....”

Notice the large lumps in the various mycelia? Somebody got to close!

Run!
